A girl in my school committed suicide last night. She was bullied over getting a high ACT score and accused of ‘cheating.’ She told nobody.

Everything is temporary until you make it permanent. Please understand that if you’re at your lowest and it can’t get any worse, it can only get better. The pain won’t last forever and life is soso fragile.

She thought she wouldn’t be missed- in a school of 2,000, not one spoke ill. We all mourned together. All disagreements and hatred was gone- we became a family. She had a large impact on those who did and didn’t know her- the mess she left behind is beyond her wildest dreams. She was so loved, yet she didn’t even know. She didn’t even get to know.

If ANY of you are ever in a position where you’re unhappy, or just need someone to talk to- I’m here.

Here in the UK we are actively encouraged by wildlife groups to feed the wildlife in our gardens! I get that the US has some more dangerous wildlife such as bears and coyotes, but still.

Garden birds are the most commonly fed wildlife over here. In fact, without our help…

The biggest problem here in the US is if we encourage the feeding of wildlife, then the fine line between helping and putting the animal in danger is basically gone. For some, like birds, it is supportive.. But then we have instances like Beggar the dolphin where they are disrespectful and feed him trash- also his dependency on humans eliminating a need to hunt.. Or manatees, that would approach boats as a result and face death. Not to mention it can put humans in immediate danger- if you feed a bear, that bear will approach people in search of food. Certain states have laws where a bear will be put to death if it approaches humans, for it acts as a threat. In some countries, feeding the wildlife may work.. But in the United States, there’s too many negative factors on both ours and the animals sides, so it’s better to just let the animals be.

Ah, that makes sense!

I guess I just find it interesting how different countries approach wildlife. Its so ingrained here to help and get involved with wildlife that the idea of leaving well alone is just strange to me. But then we don’t have big, dangerous predators to worry about. I imagine being approached by a bear is much scarier then being approached by a little hedgehog or fox. xD

Plus we don’t have rabies here, which I believe is also a big concern with wildlife and humans in other countries.

Oh yes! Raccoons especially- I know where I’m from (Florida) they have to put down any wildlife showing symptoms of rabies. It’s really dependent on the animals though, what kind of rules and regulations are in place. IMHO, I think the US is concerned with preserving wildlife in it’s natural state, which means minimizing human-animal interaction as much as possible.. With good reason- some of our citizens aren’t the most considerate or respectful of our fellow inhabitants. :( it’s really cool to see the contrast between countries approaches though, you’re totally right!

He said: ‘Incapable of fast hunting and ambushing prey it has to be dependent on the pod which, one assumes, looks after it very well.

‘It shows these mammals are not really just ruthless killing machines but they also have complex, caring social-structures in which they and care for their own disabled members.’

Mr Schimpf had been tracking the pod of seven as they hunted a Bryde’s whale - measuring 50ft (15m) in length and weighing a massive 15 tonnes.

A frogs tongue..? If you’ve ever dissected one, you’ve seen how weird and unique it is. It connects to the front of the mouth- but it has to flick out to catch prey!?

Well.. The tongue is almost like a human arm. Envision our arms with our hands balled up into a fist, and the fist being held up to the shoulder; the tongue goes out (our arm goes straight) and touches the prey- this would be the back of our hands. The tongue’s muscle contracts the second it hits the prey, and a mucus is secreted. The prey sticks to the tongue and the tongue (our arm) recedes back into the mouth (our shoulder).

Once the food is in the mouth, there’s a whole process it undergoes for digestion.. But that’s pretty complex, so I’ll simplify. There are muscles that force the food down the throat, and cilia carry it toward the gut.

Titicaca Water Frog (Telmatobius culeus)

Also known as the Andean frog or Crawford’s water frog, the Titicaca water frog is a large species of frog found only in Lake Titicaca and its rivers in South America. Like other frogs the titicaca water frog feeds mostly on small fish, insects and other small invertebrates. The Titicaca water frog has excessive skin which is an adaptation for high altitude living as the excess skin helps it breathe, as more oxygen can diffuse in. It also possesses reduced lungs, a high red blood cell count and smaller red blood cells to help it breathe in its low oxygen environment.

Nola is a cougar that suffers from toxoplasmosis- also referred to as feline distemper. She loves to be pet, but we must do so with caution- distemper is highly contagious and could easily be transferred simply by the contact of her and then another cat. She was supposed to be euthanized, but Dirk agreed to take her in and she has been living happily and healthily ever since. Her slight limp makes her wobble around- but that doesn’t stop her from greeting you with kitty rubs and kisses!

April is a Florida panther, and was actually born at the sanctuary. She is the result of the pairing of a supposedly spayed mother (Elsie) and Spudnik, a cougar used for fighting pitbulls 3 at a time. He was paired with her for socialization after he was confiscated- and April, plus her other siblings, were the result.
April only has a third of her stomach- the neighbors came into the sanctuary one night and gave her food with enough rat poison to kill her. Luckily, it was caught in time, and she came out alive. Now, she’s a little unpredictable, but my personal favorite. Aggressive with others, she’s quiet with me and I love to feed her.. Even though she’s a picky eater. ;)

JoJo is a hybrid between a serval and caracal, being one of the few throughout the world. Most die as kittens, but JoJo is thriving. He required thousands of dollars in intestinal surgery, but now lives happily (er- angrily?) at SFWRC. His past owners lived in New York and were irresponsible enough to breed animals that would have no such interaction in the wild.
